About Inclusive New Media Design

Watch Helen Kennedy talk about Inclusive New Media Design.

At Inclusive New Media Design (INMD), we want to make sure that people with intellectual disabilities are included in the web. People with intellectual disabilities are keen web users. However, websites are not always built as well as they could be for this group.

Information and guidelines exist to help web designers make websites which work for people with disabilities, but this information rarely talks about the needs of people with intellectual disabilities.

We've ran nine workshops with web designers and developers to train them in this area. 28 web designers and developers came to the workshops, and three others talked to us about their work.

People with learning disabilities came to four of the nine workshops to work as user testers. They talked to the web designers about what kind of websites they like to use.

INMD was initially a research project, funded by the Designing for the 21st Century initiative. Designing for the 21st Century is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
